Windows Update KB3161949 causes NETBIOS problems (June/July 2016)

leave a comment »

After applying some Windows Updates that have been pending for a while I then found when accessing my work VPN that NETBIOS names for resources on the VPN were not recognised.

Windows Update KB3161949 ‘hardens’ SMB by blocking access outside of the local network as described here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3161949

Fortunately, this change can be disabled by adding the following 32 bit DWORD registry value:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\NetBT\Parameters\AllowNBToInternet=1

A Windows restart is required to make the change effective.
