Where have the 17″ 1920×1200 laptops gone ?

The last four laptops that I’ve owned have all been Dells: a couple of Inspirons, a Vostro, and a Precision. Each has a 17″ screen with a native resolution of 1920×1200 pixels. Although this makes text appear fairly small, it’s a great for running Visual Studio when you want several tool windows open as well as the main text editor window.

With Windows 7 and Visual Studio 2010 now available I’m tempted to buy a new laptop just for VS2010 running on W7. The last laptop I bought was an Inspiron 1710 which despite being aimed at the home and small business markets and costing a relatively modest £700 has proved to be a capable and powerful machine for development. So, I thought I’d order another one with, if it was an option, an i5 or i7 processor but something weird has happened to Dell’s laptop range – 1920×1200 screens are no longer available. There seem to be fewer 17″ screen models and the few that there are all have a 1600×900 resolution. The only laptops with a 1920×1200 resolution that I could find on Dell’s UK web site were Precision models with a 15″ screen costing around £2000.

What’s going on ? Where have all the 17″ 1920×1200 screens gone ?
